The one question I always ask!

Years ago, during one of those team-building corporate days my former employer organised, a motivational speaker came in. I have no memory of who he was or really anything else about him. Except - I learned one incredibly valuable lesson that day. In some ways, it seems odd I don’t even remember his name.

“What is most important to you?”

That’s what I took away from him. When you're trying to help someone, stop and ask the blunt question: What is most important to you?

In real estate, buyers (and sellers) asking themselves this question is a great starting point. All buyers make trade-offs at some point in the purchase journey - location, property size, condition, access to transport - but they’ll rarely compromise on the one thing that is most important to them. Nor should they.

When you’re really clear on what matters most, you won’t waste time pursuing properties or opportunities that will never be the right fit.

What I love about this is how unique it is for everyone.

It’s why a property might be perfect for one person and not worth a second look for another—even if, on paper, their needs and budgets appear similar.

For me, this idea also ties closely to how we each define success.

When I went out on my own to start my business three years ago, I was clear on two things:

  • Within the first year, I needed to earn at least 50% of my corporate salary to ensure my long-term financial goals were sustainable; and

  • My business had to provide a flexible lifestyle - one that gave me quality time with my family and let me do what I’ve always loved: travel.

I cringe a little when I hear business owners say they can't take a holiday. If taking a holiday is important to you - you’ll find a way to make it work.

Just like I tell every home buyer I speak to: don't compromise on the one thing that is most important to you. The right property will make it work. Sometimes it might take longer than you expect or want it to. Play the long game.

If you've made it this far and were still wondering where I was going with this week's newsletter - thank you.

I'm off for a holiday!

I’m heading to Europe this afternoon for a five-week holiday with my family! While the business doesn’t shut down while I’m away (and my team is still working away), it does give me the chance to create incredible memories with people I love.

That’s my definition of success.

With that, I’ll be back in your inbox mid-June!
